The thought provoking, whimsical, storytelling art of Debbie Gallerani opened the new season at The Gallery at The Palms, curated by the talented Elizabeth Rodriguez, owner of The House Of Borrego Springs West Gallery.
In keeping with The Palms, Mid-Century Modern architecture and interior design, Gallerani's show, "Borrego Daze," has a complimentary Mid-Century Modern color palette and overall artistic recognition for The Palms aesthetic.
The show features five separate Borrego themed collections. Most of her artwork depicts in some way her sense of humor that evolved possible from her early inspiration and passion for cartooning.
Debbie's other muse featured at the show is women and the artist's fascination for vintage Hollywood stars. Showing are several illustrative painting's of stars including Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. The artist's personal recognition of the many star's that have stayed at The Palms.
In her early years, Debbie loved doodling. Creating thumb nail sketches and developing cartoon characters some of which would became cartoon strips that were published in local papers. Her first creative dream was to have a syndicated comic strip.
Debbie says, "The cartoonist in me naturally adds an amusing twist or quirky quality to my paintings." Still today she works out her ideas for painting's starting with hand created storyboard like thumbnail sketches which become the nexus she develops her storyline for a painting from. Her unique natural storytelling narrative drives the concepts for the thumbnail sketches which eventually evolve into paintings.
The process can be complex, as she balances between using digital tools from her graphic artist experience often scanning her signature hand drawn thumbnails sketches onto a screen to enlarge the sketch and develop her concept digitally before switching back into working by hand on a painting.
Debbie also explores various mixed media options including incorporating mulberry paper or cut out fabric application's to a painting. There is a lot of successful experimentation in her technique however one of her most important attributes is her artistic curiosity.
Recurring, recognizable influences in her artwork come from her childhood growing up in Palm Springs during the avant-garde 1960's era which imbued for her a deep love for the desert. Mid Century Modern design was flourishing during the 60's. Debbie's artwork today carries an early visual imprint of the famous design movement.
Debbie's career journey started in graphic design as a paste up artist, designer, and Senior Art Director, to eventually running her own company. Eventually, over the past 15 years, her art journey morphed from her lengthy graphics career into becoming a Fine Art artist.
Describing the transition to becoming an artist, 'I'm able to experience a freedom of expression that is sometimes scary and other times invigorating."
Her, "Borrego Daze," show is a meticulously detailed artistic interpretation transforming Borrego life, business and wildlife into an eclectic group of characters with a twisted bite of humor. This is an important artist who's career is going to develop. Debbie Gallerani will not stay creatively static on her artistic journey.
