BASIC is excited to welcome another year of the summer Learning Academy, now in its 8th year! From July 3 through August 1, the Academy will provide an enriching educational experience for local students, ensuring they are well-prepared for the upcoming school year.

Classes and Curriculum

This year, the Learning Academy continues its tradition of offering focused classes in reading, math, and ELD. The curriculum is designed to cater to the specific needs of the community, with classes such as:

2nd & 3rd Grade Elementary Reading

4th & 5th Grade Math (covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, including fractions, and decimals)

7th & 8th Grade Math (focusing on fractions, ratios, and percentages)

Upper Elementary/Middle School English Language Development class

Each class is led by a dedicated team of four teachers and four aides, including volunteers dedicated to ensuring personalized attention and support for every student. The smaller class sizes allow for more individualized instruction, which is crucial for effective learning. A nutritional breakfast, snack, and lunch are provided daily so that students are properly fueled for the learning process.

Impact on the Community

The Learning Academy plays a vital role in the Borrego Springs community. By providing over 100 hours of instruction per student, the program helps bridge educational gaps and fosters a love of learning. Students are selected based on their needs, ensuring that those who require the most support receive it. The program's goals include improving students' performance on standardized tests, developing positive attitudes toward learning, and maintaining high attendance rates.

Program Details

Classes are held at the UCI Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center, a location that offers a conducive learning environment. The program runs from 7:30 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday, giving students a structured yet engaging schedule.
