The Borrego Springs Film Institute (BSFI) is bringing movies back to the theater! Beginning in June 2024, the BSFI, in collaboration with the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center (BSPAC), will present free movies on the big screen at the Performing Arts Center theater. The twice-monthly screenings will run from June through December of 2024. A full schedule of screenings will be updated and posted regularly on the BSFI website: http://www.borregospringsfilminstitute.org.

Coming this June:

Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at 7pm – Hell or High Water – 2016 – R - 1h 42m

We launch our inaugural summer season with this neo-Western crime drama, from 2016, Hell or High Water. Written by Taylor Sheridan (creator/producer of Yellowstone and 1883, and writer of Sicario), the story follows two brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who carry out a series of bank robberies to save their family ranch, while being pursued by two Texas Rangers (Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham). The film won glowing reviews, has been praised for revitalizing the Western genre, and received four Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Jeff Bridges), Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 7pm – American Fiction – 2023 – R - 1h 27m

For our "Juneteenth" selection we chose from 2023, American Fiction. This comedy-drama, from first-time writer/director Cord Jefferson (writer on The Good Place and HBO's Watchmen), follows a frustrated novelist-professor (Jeffrey Wright) who writes a satire of stereotypical "Black" books, only for it to be mistaken for serious literature and published to high sales and critical praise. The film also stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae and Sterling K. Brown, and was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute. It received five Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Jeffrey Wright), and it won Best Adapted Screenplay (Cord Jefferson).

Remember, all BSFI movie screenings presented at BSPAC are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. All screenings on selected Wednesdays start at 7pm. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. We'll see you at the movies!
