The Borrego Springs Youth and Seniors Center (BSYSC) has a new partner in their Senior Nutrition Program. Meals on Wheels San Diego County (MoW) has begun bringing meals to Borrego Springs on a weekly basis.

After more than 30 years of delivering meals to the homebound seniors of the community, Executive Director Leslie Greathouse was informed in January that BSYSC would no longer be offered a contract to procure and deliver meals by San Diego County Aging and Independence Services.

After several months of no information as to why this change was made and who would get the contract, Leslie was contacted by Meals on Wheels President and CEO Brent Wakefield and COO Keith Fisher who desired to partner with BSYSC to keep the meals coming to town. The meals will be stored frozen at the Senior Center and delivered to the homebound twice a week by staff or volunteers.

Leslie said, “It has been a refreshing pleasure to work with MOW San Diego County. Everyone we have dealt with has been professional, efficient, pleasant and truly cares about getting nutrition to our seniors in need. I am very excited about this new relationship with Meals on Wheels.”

Evidently good leadership and management flows down through the organization from the top. CEO Brent Wakefield said, “Being part of an organization that helps our elders live with dignity and independence is my way of giving back what was given to me. It’s what really matters to me.”

COO Keith Fisher said, “I am thrilled to take on this role in such an important time of growth for Meals on Wheels. The work we do is essential and I am proud to be a member of this team.”

After sampling the meals, Leslie proclaimed them to be delicious. Meals offered include baked chicken with rice, potatoes and broccoli, and swiss steak with gravy, sweet potato and green beans, just to name two meals on the April menu.

Another big plus is that folks can order seven meals per week instead of five, if they choose.

On behalf of the entire community, the BSYSC sends whole-hearted thanks to Meals on Wheels of San Diego County!
