El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two United States citizens attempting to smuggle 33.4 pounds of methamphetamine through an immigration checkpoint on Jan. 31.

The incident occurred when a black 2006 Mercedes E-Class approached the Highway 86 Checkpoint at approximately 1:18 a.m. The agent inspecting vehicles in the primary lanes referred the vehicle to secondary inspection.

During secondary inspection, a Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the rear of the vehicle. Agents inspected the trunk of the vehicle and discovered a speaker box. The speaker box revealed multiple vacuum sealed packages inside. The contents of the packages contained a white, crystal-like substance that tested positive for meth.

The 29-year-old male driver and 28-year-old female passenger were in possession of 33.4 pounds of meth with an estimated street value of $38,868.

The subjects, vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
