Chamber: Do You Feel the Shift?
Last updated 3/3/2021 at 10:27am
With this column comes the uncertainty of what I’ll write about and what you end up reading. Sometimes I know the topic weeks in advance, other times I have a few ideas and then change at the last minute as I did with this one. At first I was tossing around the idea of an overview of my one year anniversary as the Chamber Executive Director (2/11), or about the jaw-dropping generosity I see in Borrego Springs with no fanfare or notoriety attached to the giving. I’m still going to write about the generosity in an upcoming column, but at the last minute, I was so struck by a new wave, vibe, feeling or whatever you want to call it in Borrego that I had to make mention of it.
There is a shift happening in Borrego Springs because of our new property owners representing primary homes and businesses along with those now interested in the area. Within the last month, the Chamber on a regular basis receives calls and emails similar to this email excerpt:
“My wife and I visited Borrego Springs this weekend as we are considering moving to the area. In driving around, I was wondering what are some of the main economic drivers in Borrego Springs, such as major employers or other sources of cash inflow. Also, have you any suggestions as to the kinds of small businesses that Borrego Springs might need, that they are without now?”
Yesterday, I received a call from someone who has already purchased a defunct business and is now trying to decide what business he wants to open in that location.
At the Chamber, we feel there is a variety of owner/operated businesses that would thrive in Borrego and are happy to suggest some that are already stated in the Embrace Borrego Guide along with answering the numerous questions that people have.
Longtime locals will be happy to know that so far everyone I’ve talked to is interested in a local business that they can enjoy, meet people and serve the community, not a corporate monster.
Let’s embrace economic growth in the community and admit to ourselves it will be fun to have more options.
