A man was killed at the scene of a single-vehicle crash, when his car went off the edge and rolled down the rocks while driving down Montezuma Valley Road Wednesday Oct. 4.
The fatal incident occurred approximately after 10:00 p.m. near mile marker 13.5.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was identified as a 67-year-old La Habra resident, driving a 1997 tan Toyota Camry.
Maribel Abrica, a 34-year-old Borrego Springs resident, witnessed when the car plunge down the embankment for unknown reasons.
Abrica said she could see the tail lights of the car at least half a mile ahead of her, when she saw the car roll down, and recalls hearing the sound of the car hit the rocks.
"I couldn't believe what I had just seen," she said.
Abrica went down the grade a bit further for her 911 call to go through, which was made at around 10:20 p.m.
California Highway Patrol Officers and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after, along with a helicopter to locate the vehicle.
The driver was the Camry’s only occupant and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to CHP. Investigators at the scene could not identify if drugs or alcohol were factors at the moment.
Roads were cleared by CHP at approximately 11:53 a.m. Oct. 5. A tow is said to retrieve the vehicle by Friday Oct. 6.
