The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued an odor advisory due to elevated hydrogen sulfide levels at the Salton Sea Monday Sept. 4, until late Tuesday Sept. 5.

SCAQMD has issued an odor advisory for the Mecca area, which is downwind from the Salton Sea, after detecting hydrogen sulfide concentrations at 53 parts per billion. These numbers exceed the state standard of 30 parts per billion.

The levels detected Monday can cause headaches and nausea, but there are no long term health risks associated with those symptoms, the agency said.

Southwest winds are expected to pick up Tuesday and have the potential to increase the intensity of the odor, the SCAQMD warned.
