Odor Advisory for Coachella Valley Area

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued an odor advisory Thursday Sept. 7 until midnight Friday Sept. 8, due to elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide from the Salton Sea.

This is the second advisory issued this week. The first was Monday Sept. 4 in the Mecca area.

SCAQMD issued an odor advisory for the Coachella Valley area, after hourly concentrations of the gas peaked at 181 parts per billion. These numbers exceed the state standard of 30 parts per billion.

There is increased potential for Salton Sea odors to occur as the winds shift, especially in the summer months in the early morning and late afternoon, or as thunderstorms occur over the southwestern U.S. deserts, SCAQMD said.
