Salton Sea Stinks Up Havasu, Mohave County

The strong Salton Sea odor made its way to Lake Havasu City and throughout the Mohave County Tuesday Aug. 15. The smell of sulfur resembled "rotten eggs" causing a nuisance to residents in the area.
California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District Monday Aug. 14 released an odor advisory for the Coachella Valley, due to elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide in the Salton Sea, which may have been carried into Arizona by the current wind flow from the Pacific Ocean into Northwestern Arizona.
In the Salton Sea’s immediate vicinity, hydrogen sulfide levels were recorded at 38 parts per billion, which can cause temporary headaches and nausea. Concentrations dissipated further from the source, but the smell on Tuesday morning was noticed by residents throughout Mohave County. There have been no hazards identified, but fire departments in the county have received calls about it, according to Havasu Fire Chief Brian Davis .
