At its April 26 meeting, the Board of Directors of Borrego Water District (BWD) awarded the contract for construction of the new “900 Tank” water storage facility to Superior Tank Co., Inc. of Rancho Cucamonga, California. This $500,000 project in the Rams Hill area will replace the failed “800 Tank” nearby and offer increased efficiency and much-needed storage capacity. Superior Tank previously worked for BWD in 1999 when they constructed the one-million-gallon Country Club Tank, which is still in good condition. The contract will be signed once BWD has received the performance and labor and material bonds, insurance, and review by legal counsel.
Construction of Solar energy facilities for the BWD office and warehouse has begun, and completion is expected sometime in May. With the success of the existing Solar facilities at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the promising results from the new office/warehouse project, BWD and their contractor, Integrity Solar, are looking at the feasibility of using Solar power at some of the District’s well sites.
On the technology side, the updated BWD website is nearing completion with help from students at Borrego Springs High School. Board members and staff are investigating additional cyber security measures which might be implemented in their new computer system, in addition to the existing firewalls and backup systems. Currently under consideration is automated vulnerability scanning, which would provide third party assurance that all systems are functioning securely and are not vulnerable to known exploits.
Issues to come before the Board in May include a presentation of updated debt management policies by the BWD Legislative Committee, final approval to issue Community Facilities District bonds for Rams Hill, and a report from Operations Manager Greg Holloway on testing for lead in the School District’s water supply.
