Caltrans and the CHP will be paying tribute to the highway workers who have died in the line of duty, during the annual Imperial County Caltrans Highway Workers Memorial Day ceremony, Tuesday, May 2.
A memorial display of 187 orange safety cones with the names of each of the Caltrans workers killed in the line of duty statewide since 1921, as well as a single black cone for other highway workers killed in the line of duty statewide will be seen at the event in El Centro. Of the 187 cones, 20 will signify Caltrans employees who lost their lives while working on highways in San Diego and Imperial counties. New cones will be placed for three Caltrans workers who lost their lives since last year, and the ceremony will also honor two CHP officers statewide and a tow truck driver locally killed in the line of duty since last year.
Caltrans District 11 Director Laurie Berman, District 11 Deputy Director of Construction & Land Surveys Amer Bata, Caltrans District Division Chief of Maintenance Everett Townsend, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) Captain Arturo Proctor will be in attendance.
