Geotourism - Destination Borrego

Of all the places in the world for tourists to visit, the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (ABDSP) offers unique mountain and desert vistas, culture, and history.
On Saturday, March 24, de Anza Country Club hosted the Borrego Valley Stewardship Council’s full-day Interactive Planning Workshop on the subject of bringing Geotourism to Borrego Springs. The term is defined as “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.” The National Geographic Society has been involved with helping to popularize Geotourism in destinations around the world.
Local and outside interested parties are involved with helping to define a successful Geotourism strategy and later get the word out about the “character of the place” called Borrego Springs. A Geotourism initiative would be centered on the ABDSP, where a visitor’s concept of Borrego Springs being merely a place to come and admire the wildflowers or attend the Borrego Days Parade could evolve into a multi-faceted destination experience. Geotourism wouldn't necessarily just bring focus to a sense of environmental consciousness and conservation practices, plus historical and cultural features; local businesses would also benefit from an increase in single day and multi-day tourist spending.
