De Anza Desert Classic Tourney - Day 1

Last updated 3/1/2017 at 5:40pm

Our last update for the de Anza leg of the Golden State Pro Tour had the horserace winners as – Colin Featherstone, Mike McCabe, and Matt Hansen. Borrego Springs resident and de Anza pro, Damien Telles, lipped out a putt on the second hole and was forced to retire. There was no Day-1 Pro-Am tourney this year.

However, the next morning, Telles had five birdies with no bogeys for a 66 on the first day of the actual tournament, tied for second place only one birdie (and one stroke) behind leader Joseph Harrison of Boulder, Nevada. Following his first-round match, replying to my comment about a great comeback from that untimely lip-out in the horserace the afternoon before, Telles said with a grin, “That’s the difference between a horserace and the tournament.” Telles went 1-under par on the par-3’s, 2-under on par-4’s, and 2-under on par-5’s. That’s a comeback by any standard, but there are still two rounds left, so it’s still anyone’s game.
