Last updated 11/5/2016 at 9:35am
The World Time Trial Championships started at 6.00p.m. yesterday with all the racers prepared to cycle non-stop through the night.
Excitement surrounded the start gate with the experienced riders showing remaining calm and upbeat about the task ahead and some of the newer competitors displaying obvious nervous tension as the skies began to darken.
Temperatures dropped over night with crews bundling up under blankets. Today should see highs of 79f as the racers compete through the midday sun for a 6p.m finish.
So far only one accident has occured. Two female cyclists got too close to each other and ended up in the sand. Both riders were unhurt and continued on their way after a little help from one of the Sun's photographers. Several riders have dropped out but the lead rider is on course to finish well over the 500 mile target.
