JV Action – Borrego Rams v. Calvin Christian Crusaders

On a rare Saturday Junior Varsity game, the Borrego Rams played host to the Calvin Christian Crusaders.
Calvin took the opening kick for a good return and on 4th and long, completed a long pass for a 1st down. Calvin fumbled the ball away on the next snap and Borrego recovered the ball on the Rams 15. Jonathan Palacio picked up a quick 11 yards but fumbled the ball, the Rams recovering. The Rams couldn’t pick up a 1st down and the snap to Carmona was off target and the Crusaders recovered the ball in the end zone for a Safety. Borrego 0, Calvin 2.
With 7:53 to go in the 2nd quarter, Sam Moore made several spectacular passes to Alexys Padilla, the last for 44 yards and the Rams are up by 4. Borrego 6, Calvin 2.
Calvin returned the Borrego kick to their own 30 and on the next play, scampered for a 70 yard touchdown. Borrego 6, Calvin 8.
On the next possession, the Rams fumbled and the Crusaders recovered the ball at the Rams 35. Lucas “the Bus” Morales dropped the Crusader QB for a 7 yard loss on 1st down. The teams traded 1st downs and possessions until :20 in the 2nd when Moore through a 57 yard TD pass to Padilla. The Rams 2 point conversion was good. At the Half, Borrego 14, Calvin 8.
On the opening kick of the 2nd Half, the Rams got a good return and were moving down the field when they fumbled once again. 2 plays later, Calvin scored again. Their 2 point conversion was good. Borrego 14, Calvin 16.
Both teams traded 3 and outs for a series each. The Rams drove 82 yards in 7 plays to go up by 6 as the 3rd quarter ended. Borrego 22, Calvin 16.
Calvin could not get it into gear and was forced to punt it away, but Padilla muffed the punt reception and Calvin recovered the ball at their own 48. 6 plays later, Calvin scored again on a 10 yard rush. Their 2 point conversion failed. Borrego 22, Calvin 22.
Borrego held the ball for the next 4½ minutes, with a one-handed circus catch by Juan Carmona for 40 yards sustaining he drive, ending the drive with a 32 yard TD pass from Moore to Padilla. The Rams 2 point conversion failed. Borrego 28, Calvin 22.
Calvin returned the Borrego kick to their own 42 and on their first play of the possession, completed a 52 yard pass and run for the final score of the game. Borrego Rams 28, Calvin Christian Crusaders 30.
