State Senator Ben Hueso announces that Senate Bill 859 has made its way to the Governor’s desk. The budget-related measure contains a proposal that would allocate $1.4 million to the Salton Sea.

“While we still have a long way to go, every bit of funding for the Salton Sea will help us reach our restoration goals,” stated Senator Hueso. “I want to thank my colleagues and the state agencies for working with me to secure funding for this precious lake.”

Senate Bill 859 is the resources budget trailer bill that provides statutory changes necessary to implement the 2016 cap and trade plan established under the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. This plan builds on the 2016 budget package to appropriate $1.4 million to the Salton Sea. Specifically, to appropriate funds from the Waste Discharge Permit Fund to the State Water Resources Control Board to provide grants or contracts for the development of planning, environmental, and design documents in furtherance of projects eliminating public health and safety risks from wastewater, agricultural and other drainage of urbanized areas for tributaries to the Salton Sea.

“The Salton Sea is an essential resource in our State and we must diligently work to protect this natural habitat,” continued Senator Hueso. “I urge Governor Brown to sign this critical measure into law.”
