Borrego Springs and Julian are two of the towns who have agreed to come together to form the "Back Country Coalition.”.

An initiative led by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, five rural towns including Ramona, Valley Center, Alpine, Borrego Springs and Julian are working together to bring in much needed tourism.

“We want to make this a unique experience that you can experience for a weekend or a getaway. There are several things that these communities offer,” says Joe Stupar, executive director of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce.

Instead of competing for visitors and tourism dollars, the five communities would work together to promote the unique features in their own community and also cross-promote events.

The "Back Country Coalition" aims to show why rural San Diego County communities are great travel destinations. The diversity between the areas, Ramona's vineyards, Borrego's desert and Julian's mountain community offer an expanse of tourism ideas. The coalition will also provide the towns the opportunity to apply for additional tourism grants.

Mary Rynearson, executive director of the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce, said they’re committed to joining the coalition, and are waiting for final approval from the board during a meeting set for Aug. 24.
