GET YOUR MONEY BEFORE IT’S GONE: $372K IN UNCLAIMED FUNDS

Deadline to claim: Sept. 12, 2016

The countdown starts today! Go online now to find out if you are owed part of $372,000 in unclaimed money before it is rolled into the County General Fund.

“If you have done business with the county in the last three years, including paying property taxes, you could be on the Unclaimed Monies list,” said San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister today.

See if there is a property tax refund with your name on it, and for the list of countywide unclaimed monies. On the website, you’ll find information on how to file a refund claim, or you can also call (877) 829-4732 for assistance. There is no charge for this service.

Every year, McAllister’s office tries to reunite San Diegans with money they have overpaid on taxes or fees. In the past five years, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office has refunded more than $330,000.

Current state law says countywide monies that are unclaimed for three years and property tax refunds that are unclaimed for four years must be turned over to the County’s General Fund – a process called escheatment.

The people on the unclaimed monies list have until Sept. 12, 2016, to file a refund claim before it is escheated. This year, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office has 1,158 unclaimed accounts, totaling $372,244.28. Property tax refunds make up $197,358.88, and $174,885.40 is from different county departments.
