Border Patrol agents found more than $89,000 worth of methamphetamine hidden in a car at a checkpoint near the Salton Sea Fri. July 8.
At around 6:30 a.m., a 41-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, both Mexican citizens, drove up to the checkpoint in a black Chevrolet Malibu. A drug-sniffing dog alerted agents to the car, prompting a secondary, intensive search.
Agents discovered 21 vacuum-sealed packages of meth hidden in a secret compartment of the trunk. The meth weighed 20.27 pounds and was valued at $89,080, officials said.
The man and woman, the car and the drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
