"Two Sheep on a Boulder" by Steve Bier, Park Ranger, Anza Borrego Desert State Park during 2016 Annual Sheep Count.

Participants in the Annual Bighorn Sheep Count spent their Fourth of July weekend scanning the hillsides of the Anza-Borrego State Park.

Planned with military precision and despite the long hike and heat, volunteers, led by Park Ranger Steve Bier, watched out for bighorn sheep in order to identify the animals by sex and age, checking for radio collars and numbered ear tags.

It's a unique way to experience the beauty of the park and you can read more about it in the Borrego Sun July 14 print edition.
