Crowd of 250 listens to talks by County and local officials during dedication ceremonies for Montezuma Road. Salton Sea is visible in the distance.

This month marks the 52nd anniversary of the opening of Montezuma Grade. Called the 'new access highway,' the road winds from mountain heights of 4,000 feet to its junction with Palm Canyon Drive on the floor of Borrego Valley. Honorary Mayor Gale Gordon proclaimed the day a holiday in Borrego Springs and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 24 that year, with 250 residents sitting in chairs on the grade.

Supervisor Robert Cozens (right) and Miss Borrego Springs Marilyn Druliner cut the ribbon with Gale Gordon and James Copley looking on.
