Ocotillo Wells - Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari
Last updated 2/28/2016 at 9:54am
This years 54th annual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari will have its headquarters at West Shores Marina & RV Park/ Johnson’s Landing Cafe March 4 - 6.
After moving the basecamp and trails from the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area to Johnson’s Landing in Salton Sea due to the Flat Tail Horned Lizard, TDS was hit with another blow following discussions with RedEarth Casino GM and CFO. In order to create private trails on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian reservation, a cultural review and impact statement would be required before trails could be used. This third-party review will take up to 90 days at a cost of $15,000, so no organized trailride will be provided this year. However, Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area will still be open for wheeling and maps and GPS coordinates will still be available to major destinations.
Thanks to the group’s hard work and dedication, the 2016 TDS Desert Safari will still be open with more than $150,000 in raffle giveaways, beer garden, fireworks, rock pile, and mud pits.
