Hal Cohen says Turkey Vultures are already migrating through Borrego Springs.

This is always a very exciting time of year for birdwatchers. Hawkwatch Hal would like to have more local residents participate in the pursuit of the migratory raptors.

He would like citizen spotters to alert him when and where large groups of Swainson's Hawks and Turkey Vultures are roosting around town. Orientation (training to help count the hawks) will begin around Feb. 24. Anyone interested in participating should contact Hal right away at raptorhal3@ gmail.com.

Hawk watching will officially begin on Feb. 20 from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the north end of Di Giorgio Road where the sand begins and continue to April 10.

The hawkblog is Borregohawkwatch.blogspot.com. ABDNHA has a birdwalk led by David Lasley every Thursday morning from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Meet opposite the entrance to Borrego Springs Resort. Call 760767-3098 to register.
