"Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Borrego April 2 to address the annual spring meeting of the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge. The conference was held at La Casa del Zorro.

Nineteen trustees of the foundation attended at the invitation of James S. Copley, chairman of the corporation publishing the Copley Newspapers and a trustee of the Freedoms Foundation.

Gen. Eisenhower and Dr. Kenneth D. Wells, foundation president, headed the conference. The board is considering another meeting in Borrego Springs in April, 1967.

A new program of conferences in Valley Forge, for all recipients of the foundation's Americanism awards in the last 17 years, was announced.

A different category of award winners will be invited to the Freedoms Foundation headquarters for a period each month to "mobilize all the brains in the 17 categories in which we give awards," Wells said. Emphasis will be on the responsibilities of patriotic citizenship.

The categories include education, the news media, and other public education which accents Americanism.

Wells estimated that 10,000 of the nation's opinion leaders would be eligible to participate in the conferences.

The theme, he added, will be "liberty under the law" and "growth of the Free Enterprise system."

Gen. Eisenhower, looking fit and tanned, arrived at the Borrego meeting from his winter home in Palm Desert. He was applauded by the conferees for his active interest in the Freedoms Foundation.

"The more complex our national problems become," Eisenhower told the board, "the more it becomes so necessary to seek the guidelines, and study the guidelines and the basic principles and convictions voiced in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

"Unless we adhere to these, the nation will drift. We must stick to these principles. This is what this organization (the Freedoms Foundation) is for - to renew our dedication."

A feature of the program was the flag pageant presented by Marine Corps Recruit Depot under the command of Maj. Gen. Bruno A. Hochmuth."
