On Monday the Obama administration announced new initiatives and over $1 billion in funding to support clean energy projects- including approval of a huge Solar project in Riverside County. The 485 megawatt Blythe Mesa Solar plant will power more than 145,000 homes and the project's transmission lines will cross federal lands. Commercial operation is expected in the next couple of years. Other administration announcements included $1 billion in loan guarantees to support rooftop Solar, small-scale energy storage and methane capture at oil and gas wells. Obama has used existing laws to support large clean energy projects- while also promoting new oil and gas development and negotiating a free trade agreement that critics claim go against efforts to fight global warming.
