Badly Shaken by Paddie Connelly: Signs of Suicidal Behavior

In the interest of maybe helping one person find a path, I am listing the accepted signs of suicidal behavior – there are others — and, although 75 percent of suicidal people exhibit one or more of these signs, some suicidal folks never exhibit one, single outward sign. I am asking everyone and anyone to be vigilant, to pay attention and, as it is in reporting international terrorism, make it so in the intimacy of daily life: if you see something, say something. Please.

Suicide Warning Signs: (adapted from Suicide.org)

Appearing depressed or sad most of the time. (Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.)

Talking or writing about death or suicide or going to another realm or reality.

Withdrawing from family and friends. Feeling hopeless. Feeling helpless.

Feeling strong anger or rage.

Feeling trapped -- like there is no way out of a situation.

Experiencing dramatic mood changes. Exhibiting a change in personality.

Abusing drugs or alcohol.

Acting impulsively or recklessly. Performing poorly at work or in school.

Losing interest in most activities.

Experiencing a change in sleeping or eating habits.

Giving away prized possessions.

Writing a will.

Feeling excessive guilt or shame.

If you or someone you know is suicidal or in crises what can you do? Immediately call 911 or 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433). Talk to someone, almost anyone, a friend, a pastor, a teacher, a parent, a peace officer. Just talk and ask for help. Please.
