West Nile Virus - Positive Samples Rise

Mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus this year has risen, bringing the number of cases to 61.
According to the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District, the latest samples came from La Quinta, Mecca and North Shore. It was the first time this year that positive samples have been found in either Mecca or North Shore. So far, officials have found 20 samples this year in La Quinta. Of the remaining samples, 36 came from Indio and there was one each in Indian Wells, Palm Desert and the west shore of the Salton Sea.
No human cases have been detected this year, however residents are encouraged to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
Symptoms include fever, headache and body aches. Severe cases may lead to hospitalization.
Safety tips include:
- Apply insect repellent such as, DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil or IR3535. DEET products should not be used on infants, and older children should receive minimal amounts.
- Avoid outdoor activity during dusk and dawn, which are peak mosquito hours.
- Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors.
- Remove standing water, which mosquitoes use to breed. Check rain gutters, drains, flower pots and anything else that may hold water.
- Install or repair screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.
