A report on the concept of planetary health that was released on Wednesday by the Rockefeller Foundation, calls for a paradigm shift in understanding the relationship between our environment, economic progress and human health. Unintended and poorly thought-out by-products of the human quest for development have led to serious pollinator die-offs, depletion of water sources, ocean acidification, climate change, polluted land, over-fishing and loss of biodiversity. According to the report, written by 15 leading academics and published in Lancet, a peer-reviewed medical journal, human-related activities “pose serious challenges to the global health gains of the past several decades. We have been mortgaging the health of future generations to realize economic and development gains in the present.”
