Interstate 10 will re-open to traffic at noon Friday July. 24, after nearly five days of shut down and thousands of motorists detoured between Arizona and Southern California.
"It's a light at the end of the tunnel," said Heath Garcia, the manager of Chiriaco Summit, a remote travel stop that had been isolated by the bridge collapse. "We were preparing for something much worse and longer."
The California Department of Transportation plans to re-open the interstate by diverting all traffic onto the westbound lanes of the Tex Wash bridge, east bound lanes will remain closed whilst the bridge is rebuilt.
The reopening of I-10 will bring a much-anticipated end to one of the most disruptive traffic problems in the recent memory of Riverside County. By the time the interstate reopens, The cities of Desert Center and Blythe have been empty and starved for travellers due to the bridge collapse, as more than 100,000 motorists found alternative routes.
