$700,000 Heroin and Cocaine Bust

Authorities arrested a man on Saturday, June. 27, at the Highway 86 checkpoint near Salton City, on suspicion of attempting to smuggle $700,000 in cocaine and heroin.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, agents stopped the 21-year-old as he approached the checkpoint in a 2002 Jeep Wrangler. After undertaking an inspection, officials found a false compartment under the vehicle's cargo area containing 20 packages of heroin and cocaine.

The heroin weighed 15.8 pounds with an estimated street value of at least $189,000. The cocaine weighed 32.7 pounds with an estimated street value of at least $523,000.

The suspect, vehicle and drugs have been turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
