On Saturday morning, May 16, a resident walking up to the ATM machine at the Wells Fargo Bank on Christmas Circle and Avenida Nordeste, spotted a man lying in the dirt on the north side of the bank building.

The Sheriff’s Department was called and promptly responded to the scene. The man was dead, lying on his side as if napping, surrounded by empty beer cans.

He was determined to be Tod Johnson, a resident of Holiday Home Park on Palm Canyon Drive where he had recently been served with a 60-day Notice to Vacate the Premises. Johnson had a history of arrests stemming from incidents of violence, domestic violence, public disturbance and trespassing in Borrego Springs, Julian and Imperial County.

Johnson was dead at the scene and appeared to have been lying there since the previous evening. Sheriffs manned the site while they waited for the coroner to arrive and have the body removed.

Wednesday, May 20 marked the day Johnson was to be served with a 7-day Notice to Vacate, making the 28th his final day to leave the park, where some of his disturbances had led to arrest.

Johnson was reported to have been suffering with the symptoms of Hepetitis C which may have contributed to his demise. Cause of death was not immediately apparent. He was 63-years-old.
