From May 7 - June 11 children throughout Imperial County will be warned to stay away from the canal system. Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is the largest irrigation district in the nation and operates and maintains in excess of 3,100 miles of gravity-fed canals and drains in Imperial County. IID’s water department delivers up to 3.1 million acre-feet of the district’s Colorado River entitlement each year to nearly one-half million irrigated acres. Approximately 97 percent of their transported water is used for agriculture. An estimated 25,000 school children will receive the canal awareness message. The Imperial Irrigation District has conducted water-safety programs for children since 1959, with ‘Dippy Duck’ becoming the official spokesduck in 1966. ‘Stay Active, Play Safe, Be Cool’ messages will be carried to both children and adults on billboards, on the radio and at the Imperial Valley Mall.
