The Franciscan monks, under the leadership of Father Fernando Martin, requested that a 'sub mission' of the San Diego missions be established to accommodate 230 'Catholicized' Native Americans. This Mission was also intended to supervise the local warring tribes.

In 1850, after the roof caved in, a small ramada was constructed so services could continue. The 'Asistencia' - as it was called - included a granary and cemetary. The current chapel was built by Mesa Grande Indians.

The conversions at this mission outnumbered the other San Diego missions and the incidents of Indian attacks decreased in the area. The Mission also served as a stop point on the road from Sonora, Mexico to San Diego. In 1857 it became a stage coach stop.

After visiting the Mission, continue to the junction of Hwys. 78 and 79 and take a left. You will pass by gigantic Lupines and mountain hiking paths on your way to the special little town of Wynola. Expect to find quaint antique shops, beer and mead tasting rooms and organic farm to table eateries.

Architectural pieces, vintage, primitive and repurposed furniture are arranged into inspired little nooks and crannies representing all the rooms in your house or apartment. My personal favorite? The oversized clock table below. Perfect for inside or dining al fresco. Creative perfectionism! Great prices for every budget. Check out the Memorial Day Lawn Sale, Saturday May 23 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Vintage jewelry, leather goods and American pottery collections are clustered in corners. Truly inspiring for all decorating needs.
